As a result of the qualifying tournaments, the nine best national teams according to the rating of the International Olympic Committee made it to the Olympic Games, as only a highly ranked Netherlands team did not get to the Games. Any of the top 10 teams could win Olympic gold. The 2018 World Championship in Japan saw the first three places taken by Serbia, Italy and China, whilst teams from the United States and Brazil also figured highly in the rankings. Russia, always a very strong team, competed under the title of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), with quickly improving teams from Turkey and the Dominican Republic and Japan, the hosts of the competition making up the rest of the field.

The results of the competition in Group A could be called predictable, if not for one surprise. Japan lost the match to the Republic of Korea in stubbornly contested match and left the tournament, having won only one game against the outsiders of Kenya. In Group B, a surprise also occurred, as the champion of the Olympic Games in Rio, the third ranked Chinese national team, did not progress from the group. Afterwards, vents developed predictably, except for a close Korea-Turkey quarter final, which Korea won only narrowly in the deciding tie break set. In the semifinals there were routine wins for the USA and Brazil, the leaders in the world rankings

Before the semifinals, it was reported that Brazilian national team athlete Tandara Caixeta had tested positive for the drug Ostarine and was provisionally suspended from the rest of the competition. It was a major blow for the Brazilian team, and they were comfortably defeated in the final. Serbia won the bronze medal. The United States women’s team won Olympic gold for the first time with Brazil’s silver and Serbia’s bronze also being the first time those teams have won medals of that colour.
