Format	Round-robin pools advanced teams to classification matches.

France was the reigning Olympic champion in men’s Olympic volleyball, but had been fifth at the only World Championship held since 2021, and had not seen the podium at the Europeans since 2015. The reigning World Champion was Italy, while Argentina had captured bronze at Tokyo 2020. The previous Olympic silver medalist, Russia, was banned by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball due to their invasion of Ukraine.

France played well in the preliminary round, but Italy, the United States, and Slovenia all had better records going into the knockout stage. The American team had been bronze medalists at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 World Championships, while Slovenia was an up-and-coming squad making its first Olympic appearance. The latter team would not advance in the quarterfinals, however, after being defeated by Poland.

The Polish men had not earned an Olympic medal since 1976, but had won the 2014 and 2018 World Championships and been runner-up in 2022. In the semifinals, they defeated the United States, but could not overcome France in the final, which became the first country to defend an Olympic men’s volleyball title since the United States in 1984-1988. As for the United States, they bested Italy three sets to zero to secure the bronze medal.
