Australia was the defending champion in men’s four but Great Britain had won most of the major internationals since Tokyo 2020 and were favored. Great Britain won the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, the 2023 Luzern Regatta, and the 2024 European Championships.
The heats were won by the United States and New Zealand, with Australia and Great Britain finishing second, also qualifying for the final. In the A final, the USA and New Zealand also led at all the early checkpoints and held on to finish in that position, with the USA taking gold and New Zealand silver. Britain lagged in the early going but had moved up to third by 1,500 metres and held on for bronze.
This was the third gold medal in the four for the USA, but it had been a long time, having won in 1904 and 1960. However, it was their 13th medal in the event, trailing only Great Britain, which won its 15th in Paris. New Zealand won its third medal in the men’s four, but its previous two were in 1972, a silver, and 1984, their only gold in the event.
