This event started badly for the Americans with the disqualification, for a false start, of the Hawaiian Henry Luning. This turned out to be the only the blemish on a perfect record as his compatriots Warren Paoa Kealoha and Paul Wyatt proved to be a class above the rest of the competition. Kealoha repeated his triumph of Antwerp in a time and bettered his time of 1920 by two seconds, finishing clear of Wyatt with Károly Bartha of Hungary taking the final place on the podium. Keahola broke the world record six times in his career, taking it from 1:15.6 to 1:11.4.
