Freestyle aeriels was a demonstration event at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics and would become a full-medal event at Lillehammer in 1994. The winner in Albertville was the somewhat unknown Swiss skiier Colette Brand. This victory jump-started her career and although she would never win a World Championship medal, she won Olympic bronze in aeriels at Nagano in 1998. Runner-up to Brand was Sweden’s Marie Lindgren, who would also place second at Worlds in 1993 and 1995, and at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics. Third-place in Albertville went to German Elfie Simchen, who had been runner-up at the 1991 Worlds.
