The British boat Cobweb won the first two races, clinching the gold medal. Some controversy concerns the make-up of the 3rd-place crew of the boat Sorais, owned by the Duchess of Westminster. Some sources indicate that she was a passenger on the boat during the races, while in his report on the yacht races, published 27 February 1909, Charles Newton-Robinson, the Yachting Racing Association representative on the British Olympic Council, refers to the Duchess as “the pilot.”
