Aurel Vernescu had the following podium finishes at the Flatwater World Championships: 1st 1963 K4 500 m, 1st 1963 K1 4×500 m (with Vasile Nicoară, Haralambie Ivanov, and the non-Olympian Anton Ivanescu), 1st 1966 K1 500 m, 1st 1966 K2 500 m (with Atanasie Sciotnic), 2nd 1963 K1 1000 m, 2nd 1963 K2 500 m (with Mircea Anastasescu), 2nd 1966 K2 1000 m (with Atanasie Sciotnic), 2nd 1970 K1 4×500 m (with Mihai Zafiu and the non-Olympians Eugen Botez and Ion Jacob), 2nd 1970 K2 500 m (with Atanasie Sciotnic), 2nd 1971 K1 4×500 m (with Dimitrie Ivanov, Mihai Zafiu, and the non-Olympian Eugen Botez), 3rd 1966 K1 4×500 m (with Vasile Nicoară, Haralambie Ivanov, and Atanasie Sciotnic).
