Biography

Masato Uchishiba first came to international attention when he won a gold medal at the 2001 Universiade in Beijing. After a silver medal at the 2002 Asian Games, Uchishiba won gold at the 2004 Olympics. He then added a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships, before returning to defend his Olympic gold medal at Beijing in 2008.

In 2010 Uchishiba became the women’s coach at Kyushu University of Nursing and Social Welfare. He was released from that position in November 2011 after allegations of sexual harassment. In December 2011 Uchishiba was arrested and charged with suspicion of rape. He was later convicted of this charge and sentenced to five years in prison. Although he appealed this, stating that the act was consensual, in February 2013 the Tokyo District Court denied his appeal and upheld the sentence.
