Biography

Hawaiian Traci Phillips started as an outrigger canoeist at age 10 and did not start kayaking seriously until 1986, but she then made three US Olympic canoeing teams. Her best finish was sixth in the 1988 kayak singles. Phillips won a gold in kayak doubles at the 1995 Pan American Games, adding a silver in the kayak quad. Phillips was a fine all-around athlete. She competed in beach volleyball and was a four-time state volleyball champion in beach doubles. She was Hawaiian state singles champion in racquetball in 1982, 1983, and 1984 and in 1984 was runner-up at the US nationals in racquetball. Phillips also surfed competitively and ran track in high school. She was twice an extra on the television show, “Magnum PI”, once as a surfer and once as a racquetball player. Phillips won the Kolokai-to-Oahu kayak race in 1979, 1981, 1984 and 1985.
