Biography

José Aguilar was on the Cuban national team from 1976-84, during which time he won the Olympic light-welterweight bronze in 1980, light-welterweight bronze at the 1979 Pan-American Games and welterweight silver at the 1983 Pan-American Games. Aguilar also won golds (in 1980 and in 1982 in light-welterweight) and bronze (in 1976 in lightweight) at the Central American and Caribbean Championships. Domestically Aguilar won four Cuban titles – in 1978 in lightweight, in 1980 and 1981 in light-welterweight and in 1983 in light-middleweight. Aguilar finished his sporting career after Cuba decided to boycott the 1984 Olympics and later worked as a boxing coach in his native Guantánamo.
