Biography

Although he never won a British title, Edward Brookfield was a member of the successful London Fencing Club that beat Birmingham Fencing Club to win the Magrini Cup team sabre competition in both 1931 and 1933. Brookfield competed at four Olympics between 1908-28 (he missed 1920), competing in both the individual and team sabre events, but without medalling.

Brookfield joined the Royal Navy as a 16-year-old and eventually rose to the rank of captain and served on HMS Illustrious, amongst others. Before World War I, he was the assistant to the Royal Navy’s Superintendent of Physical Training. Brookfield was a Justice of the Peace and also the honorary treasurer of the Rye (Sussex) branch of the National Lifeboat Institution.
