Günter Stratmann

West German fencer Günter Stratmann was the only German fencer representing Germany at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He started in all three weapons and was eliminated in the semifinals of the foil and sabre and the second round of the épée. In the foil and the sabre events he was prevented from competing in the final by losing only one match too many, making him the best competitor not to qualify. Aside from Erwin Casmir, he was the only German fencer to win national titles in all three weapons (foil in 1955, épée in 1962, and sabre in 1955 and 1956).

Startmann became an industrial businessman by profession and raised five children. One of them, Jörg Stratmann, also became an Olympian, fencing at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
