Biography

Juan Caviglia was a prolific Argentine gymnast during the 1950s. Caviglia won his first national title when he was 16 and was one of the best gymnasts in the country when he was 20. Caviglia competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the 1960 Roma Olympics. He was the only Argentine gymnast to compete at the 1960 Games. Caviglia excelled at the Pan American Games where he won a total of 21 medals.

Caviglia had the following podium finishes at major championships: 1st in the 1951 Pan American Games floor, 1st in the 1951 Pan American Games team (with Jorge Soler, Pedro Lonchibuco, Enrique Rapesta, César Bonoris, Roberto Núñez, and the non-Olympians Mario Fizbein and Ovidio Ferrari), 2nd in the 1951 Pan American Games horizontal bar, 3rd in the 1951 Pan American Games all-around, 3rd in the 1951 Pan American Games parallel bars, 3rd in the 1955 Pan American Games floor, 3rd in the 1955 Pan American Games tumbling, 3rd in the 1955 Pan American Games team (with Enrique Rapesta, César Bonoris, and the non-Olympians Joaquín Sbikowsky, Ovidio Ferrari, Martín Carranza, Mario Fizbein, and Jaroslaw Slanina), 3rd in the 1959 Pan American Games team (with César Bonoris and the non-Olympians Martín Carranza, Bautista Di Giacomo, Ricardo Licenciato, and José Flecha).

Caviglia created his first gym in 1962 and later became the director of sports for the municipality. In the city of Alta Gracia, Caviglia started many sports teams including gymnastics, athletics, volleyball, swimming, and handball. He also built the first heated swimming pool in the city.
