William Watters

William Watters was born in Townhill, near Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, the son of William Watters and Helen Kirk, his father a butcher. Growing up in the Dunfermline area, Watters was a member of the local Carnegie Gymnastics Club, one of the leading gymnastic clubs in Britain in the early part of the 20th century. In 1908-1909, Watters was a member of the Carnegie National Challenge Shield and International Challenge Shield-winning teams, alongside William Fergus, who, in 1908, was selected alongside Watters to compete in the Olympic Games in London. Competing in the individual event, Watters placed 23rd in a field of 96 participants, with a score of 225.50 points.

In 1911, Watters immigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Vancouver, British Columbia where he married in 1912. He took after his father as a butcher and continued to work in that profession for Fletcher Meats in Vancouver until his retirement in 1940. He had three children, one daughter and two sons; one of his grandsons, Jim Watters would later compete for Canada in the 1964 Olympics in pairs figure skating.
