Biography

Marshall Avener competed in gymnastics at both the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. He competed for Penn State University, graduating in 1973 when he received the Nissen Award as the nation’s top collegiate gymnast. In 1972 Avener was US Champion in all-around, and on pommeled horse and the parallel bars. He won another US title in 1974 on pommels. Avener also competed for the US at the 1975 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal with the team, and a bronze on vault.

After he left competition, Avener became women’s gymnastics coach at Penn State. He later moved with his family to Florida where he became a creative director for Rosebud Productions, a marketing firm. Avener was inducted into the US Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2012.
