Biography

Although born in Denmark, by the age of 30 Arne Sorensen was building a national reputation in Canada as one of the country’s top sport shooters. He began competing in Britain’s prestigious Bisley tournament in the 1960s and made a total of 13 appearances over the course of his career. His first major international multi-sports festival was the 1971 Pan American Games, where he took bronze with the small-bore rifle prone team. The following year he was selected to represent Canada at the 1972 Summer Olympics in the small-bore rifle, three positions, 50 metres competition and finished 49th in a field of 69 shooters. He had more luck in that event at the 1975 and 1979 Pan American Games, however, where he won a bronze and a silver medal respectively in the team tournament. In-between, he was sixth individually in the prone competition at the 1976 Olympics and fifth at the 1978 World Championships.

Sorensen was a multiple medalist at the Championship of the Americas and was a two-time Canadian national champion. He was still competing internationally as late as 1995 and was a member of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association Hall of Fame. He served in the Canadian Army and, by career, worked in the drywall industry. His son Wayne competed in rifle shooting at the 1992 and 2000 Summer Olympics.
