María Teresa Romero was interested in French as a youth and she earned several qualifications in this language before she changed her career trajectory to the fine arts. She earned a degree in painting, specializing in portraits, but was also interested in landscapes, still lifes, and compositions, and moved to Badajoz, where she established an academy in 1979. As of 2018, she had held 42 exhibitions across Spain. Between 1970 and 1978 she also took an active interest in archery, winning four Spanish national championships as an individual. She was also selected to represent her country at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where she placed 13th in a field of 40 competitors.
