Biography

Georgy Panteleymonov was the son of a nobleman from the Podolsk province in southern Ukraine. He was educated at the Vladimir Kyiv Cadet Corps and at the Alexander Military School, from which he graduated in 1904. Panteleymonov then served in the 12th company of the Moscow Life Guards Regiment. With his wife he had one son and two daughters. In the rank of lieutenant he competed in the 1912 Olympic Games at Stockholm. He was a member of the Russian team in the duelling pistol team event, which won silver, and competed additionally in two individual pistol events. In 1914 he won silver at the Second All-Russian Olympics in the small-bore rifle shooting at 50 metres.

During World War I Panteleymonov was promoted to the rank of captain of the Life Guards Moscow Regiment. He was shell-shocked twice and was awarded several military orders including the orders of St. Stanislaus, St. Anna, St. George, and St. Vladimir at various degrees. At the end of the war he was a colonel and head of the Petrograd School of Ensigns.

Subsequently, Panteleymonov participated in the Civil War and joined the Volunteer Army, commanding a company of the Moscow Life Guards Regiment. In the beginning of 1920 he led the 2nd Combined Guards Regiment until the rapid defeat of the White Army. As commander of the remnants of the Combined Guards Regiments he retreated from the Odessa region to Poland. Although he was wounded and had contracted typhoid, in the rank of a colonel, he joined the Russian army of General Wrangel on the Crimea peninsula. After the army’s evacuation, he went to former Yugoslavia, where he lived in Beograd (Belgrade), still staying in touch with the members of the former Life Guards of the Moscow Regiment.
