Biography

Freestyle swimmer Sally Davison attended Hurlingham School, Fulham, and helped them win the English Schools freestyle team title in 1964. Her twin sister Ann was a reserve. Sally enjoyed her finest year in 1968 when she won both the ASA 440 and 880 yards freestyle titles (and was third in the 220). She then went to the Mexico Olympics, where she competed in the 200 and 400 metres but failed to progress beyond the first round. That same year she broke the British 800 metres record with 9:59.30 in the international against Hungary at Budapest.

In January 1970 Davison married John Hogg, the Scotland national swimming coach and director of swimming. After making her home in Edinburgh she joined the Warrender Club, of which David Wilkie was also a member, and she continued to add Scottish titles to the English ones she had already won. Also in 1970, Hogg finished second in the ASA 880 and went to the European Championships in Barcelona, but the team doctor ruled her out of the 400 after contracting a viral infection.

Despite having previously been an England international Hogg was given clearance to represent Scotland at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. Following the Games she retired to start a family and after her husband took a job as head swimming coach at the University of Alberta after the family relocated to Canada.
