Biography

When he burst onto the swimming scene as a teenager, Albert Dickin was not only an outstanding swimmer but was also an excellent diver and water polo player for his club, Hammersmith SC. At the age of 19, he was appointed captain of both the swimming and water polo sections of the club, where his brother Jack was also a member. Albert set an English native record for the 100 yards freestyle of 57.8 in 1921, and that same year won his second successive Amateur Diving Association (ADA) plain diving title. He shared the 1922 ADA with Reggie Knight.

Between 1921-27, Dickin enjoyed more than 10 podium finishes at the ASA Championships and, after seven podium finishes in the 100 and 220, he eventually won the 220 yards freestyle title in 1927. He also won the 1923 and 1929 national graceful diving titles. Dickin competed in both the high diving and 100 metres freestyle events at the 1920 and 1924 Olympics. At the 1924 and 1928 Games he reached the final of the 4x200 freestyle relay in both years, with a fifth place in the first year being his best result. After giving up competitive swimming and diving, he continued giving exhibitions, and played water polo into his 30s.
