Swimmer Rita Schumacher placed sixth with the 4x100 freestyle relay with the mixed German team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. She also competed in the 100 freestyle, but was eliminated in the heats. In 1962, 1963 and 1966, she won East German 100 freestyle titles, while in 1964 and 1965 she came in second. In 1964 and 1965 she also placed second in the 200, and in 1965 was also second in the 400 free.
