Thomas Aretz

Thomas Aretz won his only West German national title in 1970, winning the 200 individual medley. He competed in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, failing to qualify for the 100 breaststroke final, and was eliminated in the heats of the 200 breaststroke. At München in 1972 he failed to reach the final of the 200 IM. He swam for Wasserfreunde Wuppertal.

Aretz studied medicine at Harvard Medical School, receiving an MD degree, and becoming certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Since 1981 he has practiced cardiovascular pathology. He was the course director of a major integrated medical school course at Harvard from 1992-2005. He also was a Program Director for the Harvard Macy Institute, and has been involved in international programs since 1996. Aretz held a clinical appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), where he completed his post-doctoral training. He served on many academic and hospital (Institutional Review Board chairman) committees and industrial boards, and was the co-founder of three medical technology companies.
