Biography

Middle-distance freestyle swimmer Jörg Hoffmann represented East Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and then re-unified Germany at Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996. He placed ninth in both the 400 and 1,500 metres at Seoul, and won the 1,500 bronze medal in 1992. Hoffmann finished seventh in both the 400 and 1,500 at Atlanta.

In 1991, Hoffmann was double world champion in both events, swimming a world record 14:50.36 for the 1,500, becoming the first swimmer under 15 minutes. He also added one gold, five silvers and one bronze at the short-course World Championships. At the Europeans he won four golds (all 1,500), one silver and one bronze, and also one gold and three silvers at the short-course Europeans.

After German re-unification it became known that Hoffmann was given doping substances as a part of the state prescribed doping program. He studied forestry and lived on a houseboat at Potsdam. In 2005, he was named Chief Regional Coach at the Olympic Center Potsdam.

Personal Bests: 400 m freestyle – 3:48.04 (1991); 1500 m freestyle – 14:50.36 (1991).
