Biography

Sergey Smiryagin was a freestyle swimmer who competed at the 1980 Moskva Olympics. He was mostly known for his contributions to Soviet relay teams, winning four relay medals at the 1982 and 1986 World Championships, with three silvers and a bronze. In 1981 and 1983 he helped Soviet relay teams win three gold medals at the European Championships. Smiryagin’s greatest tournament was the 1983 Universiade when he won four gold medals, three in relays and one in the 100 freestyle. Smiryagin also won the 100 freestyle at the 1984 Friendship Games in Moskva. He swam on Soviet relay teams that set four European records, three in the 4x100 freestyle relay and one in the medley relay. Smiryagin was named an Honored Master of Sports in the USSR.
