At the 1991 Pan American Games Tappin won three gold medals, in the 100 freestyle, the 4x100 free relay, and the medley relay. Tappin started college at the University of Florida but later transferred to the University of Arizona. She won six NCAA titles in all, one at Florida, and five at Arizona. Tappin later spent time in Los Angeles, doing modeling, and then served as the head swim coach at the University of New Orleans from 2004-07. She and her husband, Russell Doussan, had twin daughters, Beau and Hartley. Hartley was born with a heart defect and Down’s syndrome and Tappin made this her cause.
