Biography

After serving with the Royal Canadian Signal Corps during World War II, Dave Campbell attended the University of British Columbia, where he earned a law degree in 1949. Although he was a successful lacrosse player in his youth, at UBC he became involved in the school’s basketball team, which won the 1947 Canadian National Championship and was selected to form the core of Canada’s delegation in the sport to the 1948 Summer Olympics. With three wins and two losses, the Canadians finished third among five nations in their group, behind Uruguay and eventual bronze medalists Brazil, and did not advance to the quarter-finals, placing ninth overall.

Campbell continued to play amateur basketball into the 1950s, but he gradually shifted his focus towards law. He spent his professional career as a lawyer, eventually founding the firm Pratt and Campbell in 1960. He first became a judge in 1974 and, by the time of his 1996 retirement, was Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. He was inducted into the University of British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame in that same year as a member of the 1947 UBC Thunderbirds.
