Biography

Albert Whittingstall was born in the seaside town of Selsey in West Sussex, one of seven children born to harbourmaster Albert Joseph Whittingstall and his wife Harriet. A member of the Hammersmith Amateur Wrestling Club, the highlight of his wrestling career would come when he competed in the lightweight class of the Greco-Roman wrestling event at the 1908 Olympic Games in London, losing his only match to Anders Møller of Denmark. He married Florence Gill in 1919, and was a lighterman by profession for all of his working life.
