Biography

José da Conceição was a very versatile athlete who competed at the Olympics in the sprints, the high jump, and the triple jump, winning a high jump bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Games. He was a four-time high champion in the South American Championships, and also won the sprint double at the 1958 South American Championships, after winning the 200 metres in 1954. De Conceição won two bronze medals at the 1955 Pan American Games, in the 200 metres and the high jump, after placing fourth in the high jump at the 1951 Pan Ams. He won gold in the high hurdles at the 1962 Ibero-American Games. He also competed occasionally in the long jump and decathlon. Da Conceição worked as a factory worker, but was tragically murdered in Rio de Janeiro at only 43-years-old.
