Biography

Bob Hutchison was a sprinter who competed for Canada at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was a provincial champion and represented the Flying Y track team. In high school he also played rugby, playing on British Columbia schoolboy teams that won the provincial championship. He attended the University of Washington on a track scholarship.

After college Hutchison obtained a law degree. His father, Bruce Hutchison, was a well-known local journalist, whose name was given to the local library and the journalism prize in the province, and young Hutchison aspired to follow in that profession. However, he became a lawyer, and briefly dabbled in politics. His career was in civil litigation but in 1982 he was named a judge on the County Court of Vancouver Island, and in 1990 was named to the British Columbia Supreme Court, where he sat as a judge for over 20 years. He was later given a legacy award for sport from the University of Victoria, and was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame.
