Cuban track and field athlete Violeta Quesada began her career as a sprinter when she was 15-years-old while studying at school in La Habana. Quesada’s first major success came at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg when she and compatriots Marcia Garbey, Cristina Echeverría, and Miguelina Cobián won gold in the 4 × 100 metres relay. At the same Games she also finished seventh in the final of the 200 metres. The following year the Cuban quartet of Quesada, Marlene Elejalde, Fulgencia Romay, and Miguelina Cobián won silver in the same race at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. At the 1970 Central American and Caribbean Games she also won silver in the 200 metres. In 2005 Quesada was inducted into the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Confederation Hall of Fame.
