Biography

Long-distance runner Günter Havenstein placed 57th in the 1960 Rome Olympic marathon. Between 1952 and 1962, he collected six East German titles and had several more podiums at various distances between 5K and the marathon. Originally a farmer, he was later educated as an officer in the Nationale Volksarmee (National Peoples’s Army) and as a teacher.

Personal Best: Mar – 2-22:46 (1962).
