Biography

Bernd Herrmann, 400 metre runner, earned the bronze medal with the 4x400 relay at the 1976 Montréal Olympics together with Franz-Peter Hofmeister, Lothar Krieg and Harald Schmid, where he was also eliminated in the semifinals of the 400. Four years earlier at München the relay placed an unfortunate fourth, this time with Horst-Rüdiger Schlöske, Hermann Köhler and Karl Honz. In 1977 he won the World Cup with the relay and was 1978 European Champion with Hofmeister, Schmid and Martin Weppler. Four years earlier he won a bronze medal in the 400 m at the Europeans. At the European Cup he added two more titles with the relay in 1973 and 1977, and was runner-up in 1975, also winning the 400 metres in 1977. Domestically Herrmann won 7 West German individual and 12 relay titles.

In 1976 Herrmann was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf. He was a graduate business teacher and was employed by the commercial business school at Göppingen.
