Biography

Christian Welp left Germany to play basketball for the University of Washington from 1983-87, eventually becoming the score’s all-time leading scorer. He helped the Huskies win the 1984 and 1985 Pac-10 regular season titles and was Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1986. Drafted 16th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, Welp played two years in the NBA with them and then played a third NBA year, splitting time between Golden State and San Antonio. He later played nine seasons in Europe, in Germany, Italy, and Greece. He was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Pac-10 Hall of Honor in 2007.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics he represented West Germany and finished eighth. In 1993, he won the European CHampionships and in total, he earned 106 international caps. From 2004-06 he worked as an assistant coach with the German national team. He later settled at Seattle working in the costruction industry.
