Biography

Having finished fifth in the 1907 World Championships at Vienna, Gwendoline Lycett finished second to Keiller Greig in the Public Schools International Challenge Cup at Celerina, Switzerland, the following year. Also in 1908, she finished fifth at the Olympics and was crowned that year’s St. Moritz Skating Association’s lady champion. Lycett competed in her second World Championship at Davos in 1912, when she finished fourth, just being edged out of a medal by her compatriot Phyllis Johnson.

In addition to figure skating, Lycett was a multi-sport athlete, and also active in punting, golf and cycling. She was a prominent female cyclist in London in the early 1900s, and was noted to have ridden a total of 7006 miles in 1902. In 1920, Lycett married Francis William Bontor, a merchant; the couple did not have any children. She continued to be involved with golfing into the 1930s. Lycett died in 1954 at the Holloway Sanatorium in Virginia Water, Surrey at the age of 73.
