James Cushing finished third in the AAA 440 yards in 1922 and, after finishing second to Fred Blackett for the Middlesex 440 title in 1924, was selected as a reserve for the 4 x 400 metres relay squad at the Paris Olympics. The year after the Games, he won the Middlesex title and was also runner-up in the AAAs.
After Cushing’s competitive running days, the former Polytechnic Harriers vice-president worked at the newly opened Southend Greyhound Stadium from 1933, and in 1937 became a greyhound judge. After the Southend Stadium closed in 1940, Cushing moved to Wimbledon where he became publicity manager, steward and judge.
