German freestyle swimmer Torsten Spanneberg won the bronze medal with the 4x100 IM relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also finished an unfortunate fourth with the 4x100 free, only 0.37 seconds behind Brazil. At Athens in 2004 this relay squad could only finish eighth. Individually, he failed to reach the 100 metres freestyle finals in 2000 and 2004.
At World Championships, Spanneberg won a silver medal in 1995 with the 4x200 free at the Short-Course Worlds, and at the Long-Course Worlds in 2001 he added a silver with the 4x100 IM relay, and a bronze with the 4x100 free. In 1994, he won another bronze with the 4x200 free, but swam the heats only. At Europeans he won four gold medals, five silvers, and two bronzes. Spanneberg was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. In total, he won nine German national titles, all over 50 and 100 metres freestyle. He studied business administration.
