Biography

Born in Philadelphia in 1975, Thomas Shimada was a professional tennis player who represented Japan. A doubles specialist, Shimada achieved a career-best ranking of #40 in the world in September 2001 and a best singles ranking of #477 in the world in November 1997. In 2000 he and Satoshi Iwabuchi competed in the doubles at the Sydney Olympics but were eliminated in the first round. A year later Shimada won his first ATP title when he and Byron Black were victorious at the Kingfisher Airlines Tennis Open in Shanghai. He won two further doubles titles; the first with Robbie Koenig in 2002 and the second with Todd Perry in 2003. Shimada reached the second round at all four Grand Slams during his career but never progressed any further. He did slightly better in the mixed doubles, reaching the third round at Wimbledon in 2002 with compatriot Rika Fujiwara.
