The Gambia (GAM)

The Gambia’s National Olympic Committee was formed in 1972 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1976. The Gambia has competed continuously at the Olympic Games since 1984, but it has never competed at the Olympic Winter Games. The nation has yet to win an Olympic medal.

Gambian athletes have competed in track & field athletics, boxing, judo, swimming, and wrestling. Their best known athlete has been 400-metre runner Dawda Jallow, who made the 1988 quarter-finals in that event, and carried The Gambian flag at the Opening Ceremonies of 1988, 1992, and 1996. The best result by a Gambian athlete came in 2012, when Su Wai’bou Sanneh qualified for the semi-finals of the men’s 100 metres. At Tokyo 2020, Gina Bass also reached the semi-finals, in the women’s 100 and 200 metres.
