Equatorial Guinea’s National Olympic Committee was formed in 1980 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 26 July 1984, at the IOC session in Los Angeles, which enabled the nation to make its Olympic début at the Los Angeles Games that year. Since then, it has been represented at every Olympic Games, but only had athletes in the track & field events until 2000, at Sydney, when two swimmers (one male and one female) and two track & field athletes represented the nation at the Olympics. At Athina 2004, Equatorial Guinea was represented by one male and one female track & field athlete, and a male judoka competed for the nation for the first time. Through 2022, Equatorial Guinea has been represented by 28 Olympians, 19 men and 9 women. The nation has not yet competed at the Olympic Winter Games.
Equatorial Guinea’s best Olympic participation to date was probably by José Mba Nchama, in the 2008 judo men’s half-middleweight class, when he finished =21st out of 35 competitors, although he lost his only match. Despite not having yet achieved success at the Olympic Games, Equatorial Guinea did win a silver medal at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, with its girls’ football (soccer) team.
