Description

Yemen was formed on 22 May 1990, by combining the nations of the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic, but the National Olympic Committees of both countries had already merged on 8 February 1990, and they wrote a joint letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 13 March 1990. The Yemen Olympic Committee was shortly thereafter recognized by the IOC in September of the same year, at the IOC Session in Tokyo. Since 1992, Yemen has competed at every Olympic Games, but has yet to compete at the Olympic Winter Games.

Yemeni athletes have yet to win an Olympic medal and have usually been eliminated in the first round of competition. Taekwondoka Tameem Al-Kubati achieved the best result for an athlete from Yemen, with an equal ninth place (in a field of 16 competitors) in the men’s flyweight class.
