Description

Yemen was formed on 22 May 1990 by combining the nations of the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic, but the National Olympic Committees of both countries had already merged on 8 February 1990 and they wrote a joint letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 13 March 1990. The Yemen Olympic Committee was shortly thereafter recognized by the IOC in September of the same year at the IOC Session in Tokyo. Yemen has since competed at the Olympic Games of 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. Yemeni athletes have yet to win an Olympic medal and have usually been eliminated in the first round of competition.
