Hockey at the 1992 Summer Olympics

Dates 26 July – 8 August 1992
Medal Events 2

The 1992 Olympic hockey matches took place at the Estadio Olímpico in Terrassa, 20 km northeast of Barcelona. This was the last hockey venue with the matches played on a grass field as the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) now mandates that the event must be held on an artificial surface. The formats were the same as in 1988 with 12 men’s teams and eight women’s, both of whom were separated into two groups, with the top two teams in each group advancing to semi-finals.

The 12 men’s teams qualified as follows – Spain as the host nation; the Netherlands as the 1990 World Cup Champion; two teams from the 1991 European Cup (Germany, Great Britain); Australia from the 1991 Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament; Pakistan from the 1991 Asian Cup; Argentina as the 1991 Pan American Games champion; Egypt as the 1991 African Games champion; and four teams from the 1991 Intercontinental Cup (Soviet Union, India, New Zealand, Malaysia).

The eight women’s teams qualified as follows – Spain as the host nation; Australia as the defending champion; the Netherlands as the 1990 World Cup Champion; and five teams from the 1991 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Germany, New Zealand, Canada, Great Britain, Korea [South]).

Germany won the men’s tournament, defeating Australia in the final match, with Pakistan taking the bronze medal. The host Spanish women won the gold medal by defeating Germany in the finals, with Great Britain winning the women’s bronze.
