Hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics

Dates 6 – 19 August 2016
Medal Events 2

Both the men’s and the women’s field hockey tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro. As in the previous Olympic Games, there were two groups with six teams each. Then the best eight teams - and not just the best four - determined the medal winners in knock-out matches. A new match format reduced the playing time from two 35-minute halves to four 15-minute quarters, with 2 minutes rest after each period, and a 15 minutes halftime. In the knock-out stage there was no extra time but an immediate a penalty shootout with five shooters. For the first time the UK won the gold medal for the women and Argentina for the men.
