Figure Skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics

Dates 9 – 23 February 2018
Medal Events 5

Figure skating, the oldest sport in the Olympic Winter Games, celebrated 110 years as an Olympic sport at PyeongChang in 2018. The glamour event of the Games, the 1000th Olympic Winter Games medal, was awarded in the men’s singles competition.

PyeongChang marked the first Olympic Winter Games where figure skaters could use music with lyrics during singles and pairs events (ice dance was already doing this).

From 9-23 February, in the five figure skating events (1 men, 1 women, 3 mixed), there were 153 athletes (76 women, 77 men) from 32 nations entered to compete at the Gangneung Ice Arena.

The arena, with a seating capacity of 12,000, was specifically built for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games at a cost of $85 million USD, leaving a legacy for local recreational use following the Games.

Canada had the top contenders in all disciplines, including the team event, which made its début at Sochi in 2014. Russian athletes that were cleared to compete, did so as “Olympic Athlete from Russia” (OAR).
