After Beijing 2022, the Professional Women’s Hockey League was formed in 2023, an important milestone in establishing a top-level professional league for women’s ice hockey, consisting of players from multiple competing nations. In addition to the PWHL, other players in the women’s tournament played in women’s leagues in Europe and Asia, and in North American college ice hockey. Ten nations contested the tournament in addition to the host nation, six qualifying from their IIHF ranking, and the other four (Germany, Japan, and Sweden) by qualification tournaments held February 2025. As with the men’s tournament, France replaced Russia, who were banned from international competition by the IIHF since 2022.

The United States came into the tournament heavily favoured as the defending world champions, having won their last six games against their archrival Canadians, going back to the 2025 World Championships held at České Budějovice in 2025 and a friendly series played in late 2025. Canada, the defending Olympic champions from Beijing, and the United States had finished either first or second since the debut of the Olympic event in 1998, with Canada winning five golds, and the United States with two, most recently in 2018. After the preliminary round, the United States, Canada, Czechia, Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, and Italy advanced to the quarterfinals. In that round, the defending bronze medallists, Finland, lost in a close 1-0 match to Switzerland, while the United States, Canada, and Sweden won their matches against Italy, Germany, Czechia. The United States and Canada eventually prevailed in the semifinals, with the Americans winning 5-0 over Sweden, and Canada 2-1 over Switzerland with two goals from captain Marie-Philip Poulin.

In the bronze medal match, Switzerland emerged victorious over Sweden, with the game-winning goal scored by Alina Müller in overtime, which captured Switzerland’s second bronze medal at the Olympic Games after Sochi 2014, where Müller, then 16-years-old, also scored the game-winning goal. Despite a lopsided score of 5-0 between the Canadians and USA in the preliminary round, the gold medal match was closely contested. Canada led by a score of 1-0 on a goal by Kristen O’Neill up until within the last five minutes of the third period, when a goal by Hilary Knight tied the game, sending it into overtime. In the extra frame, the winning goal was scored by Meghan Keller 4:07 into the period, earning the Americans their first Olympic gold in women’s ice hockey since Pyeongchang 2018.

Keller and her teammate Caroline Harvey co-led the final individual scoring statistics for the tournament, with each registering 9 points in 7 games. Harvey was later named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and best defence player, with Canada’s Poulin being named the best forward and Switzerland’s Andrea Brändli as the best goaltender.
