In 2001, Aleksandr Moskalenko (RUS) had won his fifth World Championships, adding that to his 2000 Olympic gold medal on the trampoline. But he had been defeated at the 2003 World Championships, finishing second to Henrik Stehlik of Germany. Ukraine’s Yury Nikitin had finished sixth at that event. Stehlik led the qualifying in Athina, followed by Nikitin, with Moskalenko only in fourth place. In the final, the three were close. Stehlik was hampered by having the lowest difficulty tariff. Nikitin and Moskalenko had equal tariffs, but Nikitin edged Moskalenko to win the gold medal, with Stehlik taking the bronze.
