The world record had been broken twice in the Olympic year, first by Ilsa Konrads at Sydney in February with 4:45.4, and then by Chris von Saltza of the USA at the US Trials in Detroit in August, posting 4:44.5. They both won their heats, with von Saltza’s time of 4:53.6 the fastest by two seconds. She easily won the gold medal, pulling out to an early lead, and holding on in the last lap as Sweden’s Jane Cederqvist, the 800 metre world record holder, finished strongly for the silver medal. The bronze went to Tineke Lagerberg of the Netherlands, with Konrads fading and finishing fourth.
