In addition to the Windglider competition, which was the full medal sport for windsurfing (or boardsailing), a demonstration event was held for men using the Windsurfer One, designed by Hoyle Schwitzer. The competition consisted of three phases – slalom, freestyle, and long-distance. Sixteen (16) sailors started with Australian Bruce Wylie finishing first, with a fifth place in slalom, second in freestyle, and first in long-distance. He was followed by American Darren Hamm. Wylie later spent 15 years as a professional windsurfer, before moving to Hawai’i where he joined Cobra International as chief commercial officer.
