Biography

Willie Hastie spent his senior career with Queen’s Park having joined them from Gala Fairydean in 1948. He went on to play for them 282 times over the next 10 seasons, and in 1955-56 helped them capture only their second League title when they won the newly named Scottish Division Two. Hastie was a Scottish amateur international from 1950-56 and played at Wembley for Scotland on three occasions, including their memorable 2-1 victory in 1952. It was the first ever amateur international at Wembley Stadium, and Scotland’s win ended a run of 15 matches without defeat for England, stretching back to 1949. A left-back or left-half, Hastie captained both his club and country, and in 1952 was selected for the Olympic Games but never played in Great Britain’s only match, a 5-3 defeat by Luxembourg. A lead merchant by profession, Hastie was an all-round sportsman and in the summer months played cricket for Forfarshire.
