Biography

Austrian skeleton pilot Martin Rettl surprisingly won the silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics despite winning the gold medal at the World Championships the previous year. Retti was the Austrian flagbearer at the Closing Ceremony at the 2002 Games. Four years later at Torino he placed 13th.

Rettl won five Austrian national titles from 2001-05. His best overall World Cup result was third in the 2002 season. He was awarded the Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria in 2001. By profession, he became an air traffic controller in Innsbruck and coached sliders from Belgium, New Zealand, and Spain.
