Biography

Between 1970 and 1976 Andrzej Matysiak won six titles at the Polish sprint canoe championships in kayak events. In 1971 Matysiak just missed out on a medal at the World Championships when he finished fourth in the K-1 4 x 500 metres. The performance earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1972 München Games, where he reached the semi-finals in the K4 1,000 metres. Two years later he won two bronze medals at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Mexico; finishing third in the K1 4 × 500 metres with Kazimierz Górecki, Ryszard Oborski, Grzegorz Śledziewski, and third in the K4 1,0000 metres with Górecki, Oborski, and Grzegorz Kołtan. After his competitive career Matysiak worked as a coach. His students included world champion Piotr Siemionowski and Anna Puławska, who won two medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
